1860 VOLK BUST

This reproduction is a reproduction of one of the earliest
busts of Abraham Lincoln, done in 1860 by noted sculptor
Leonard Wells Volk. Early in the spring of 1860, Volk asked
Lincoln to sit for a casting in his studio. Lincoln found
the process, which involved breathing through quills for an
hour while the hot plaster hardened on his face, "anything
but agreeable." It was from this detailed cast Volk
fashioned a life-sized bust, a copy of which he presented to
Mrs. Lincoln in May of 1860 |
