The most famous document in the U.S. history. the Declaration of Independence, was drafted in an act of desperation. By June of 1776, the Revolutionary War more than a year old and if American colonists were were finally to secure the freedom they had demanded of Britain, they needed a bolder stroke: a declaration of total. absolute independence.
.     The leaders of the Continental  Congress appointed five men - among them Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin - to draw up a formal declaration. Jefferson was chosen to write the rough, though he did not want the job. "I did not consider it any part of my charge to invent new ideas," Jefferson said, "but to place before mankind the common sense of the subject." He completed the first draft in two weeks.
      After long, often bitter debate, the moment arrived. Late on a stifling July evening in Philadelphia, Congress adopted the declaration. Church bells throughout the city announced the birth of the United States of America.
     Congress ordered the Declaration rendered on Parchment, which the 56 members of Congress began signing on August 2, 1776. Over the long decades since, the document has been displayed in hundreds of settings, suffering the ravages of excessive handling and harsh light. In 1952 it was permanently enshrined in a helium-filled, moisture-controlled, bombproof vault in the National Archives building in Washington, D.C. where hundreds of thousands of visitors every year pay homage to this, the primary symbol of American freedom.
